portable media player review

Cowon iAudio A2 media player

The Cowon A2 is the portable media player with a 4 inch TFT wide screen and built in stereo speakers. The screen can display a resolution of 480 x 272. At 133 by 78 mm, 22mm thick and weighing 298 grams means that it is slightly larger but much heavier then the iPod Touch. This doesn't necessarily mean it's not as good though.

The A2 boasts a powerful 4300mAh Built-in Rechargeable Lithium Ion Battery providing 10 hours video and 18 hours audio playback. The battery takes 5 hours to recharge but it does come with an AC adapter to plug it into the mains.

Cowon iAudio A2 media playerA variety of video formats can be played including the avi files, DivX 3.11/4/5, XviD and MPEG4 are supported. You can also play ASF and Windows own WMV videos formats. For music there is the standard MP3 as well as WMA, OGG, FLAc and WAV. For photo's you can view them in JPG, PNG and the pointless but still supported BMP formats. Interestingly you can also use the A2 to view text files.

Controls on the player are not touch screen but use a mini joystick and buttons much like a digital camera. Transferring files to and from the player via USB is done by dragging and dropping. The device used a 20GB or 30Gb (depending on the unit) built in hard drive. Whilst not massive it's plenty of room for movies.

One of the great features of the player is that it can be connected to and audio video source to record from. That means that you could video directly form the TV or a handheld video camera.

Overall Cowon is a great portable player for movies whilst a passenger in a car or on a train. As it also plays music and has a built in FM radio it's also useful whilst in the garden or out and about.
